What Voice Do You Listen To?




      What is that in your hand? I asked my oldest as she trudged her way through the kitchen. Instead of showing me, she fisted her hand and put it behind her back. After reaching around her and prying it out of her hands, I read the crumpled note. Dated September 18, 2009, “Chy I love you so very much, you are amazing and God has given you so much talent.”
     It was a note I had written and stuck in her lunch box over three years ago. Chy began crying softly as I hugged her. She had just been disciplined for disobeying her dad, on top of having a school meeting with her teacher about making more effort in the classroom. The voice that was screaming in her head about how she wasn’t good enough was choking the life out of her. Despite her struggles, we as parents agreed that she needed to be treated just like everyone else, regardless of her disabilities. Yet to our precious daughter, she felt she lacked what she needed to succeed.
     Frustrated, I hugged her and sent her off to a hot shower, replaying our conversations. As her cheerleader, I’ve made every effort to encourage and reinforce she is a beautiful, talented, gifted, compassionate child. Actions speak louder than words and so do the voices in our heads. How many times have you failed at something and told yourself, “That was awesome, let’s do it again!”? I’m going to venture to guess, the conversations you have in your head tend to be more like, “Well that was sure fun, sure ain’t gonna do that again, I don’t need the world knowing that I’m a failure, I can’t get anything right!
     I am afraid to believe in myself. Everything I have ever put my heart into has backfired or failed. I’ve either created a big mess that I couldn’t clean up on my own, or I’ve gotten arrested, slapped with a fine or lost relationships over it. The voice that has set the tone for my life has been, “Don’t bother trying, you’re going to fall right on your butt, and everyone who already knows the truth, will be there to say, I told you so.”

     So when I got the letter stating, “Heather, I’ve had the opportunity to read your  manuscript(older version) and I just love it! I remember meeting you and your passion for the subject of motherhood, as a mother myself and with my background as head editor of Today’s Christian Woman magazine for 7 years, I LOVE THIS TOPIC. I also love your writing style—natural, yet pithy and very insightful and helpful. We definitely want to publish your book.”

I was completely floored. This had been the dream I had been working towards for the last two years of writing my book, Mama Needs A Time-Out.  This moment reinforced that my perspective was wrong and so was my daughter’s.  Some of us have the natural tendency to think we aren't good enough, life comes along with it’s bumps and challenges, further reinforcing the warped view we see of ourselves.
     This warped view is in the back of our minds, painting every conversation, every interaction, every struggle, and our success. It’s time to replace this warped view with how we are created. We. Do. Not. Lack. Anything.  We may be born with a predisposition of struggling with certain weaknesses, but that’s the beauty of knowing God. He works through our weaknesses, that’s when His power, His abilities, and His strength are unleashed in our lives…if we allow Him. My daughter’s principle gave me a great word picture, if you’re given a dull ax, you’re going to have to swing harder.
      No matter your inabilities, insecurities, trip ups, hang ups, mess ups. We have one choice, we can agree with the voices in our head or we can ask God for the strength to swing harder. We can either view ourselves as lacking or we can ask God for the courage and the insight to see ourselves as He sees us.
     There is power in positive thinking, but that positive thinking works better in the form of seeing ourselves with our spiritual eyes. What are your hang ups? What are your inabilities? Are you willing to step beyond yourself and ask God to give you the strength, courage and ability to swing that ax harder or rely on yourself?

Fearfully Made is Caught--Not Taught.

     How did we learn about life, friends, and the world when we were little? Most of the stuff I remember from childhood was caught per say, not taught. I don't remember much from textbooks, lectures, or tests. The lessons I learned were walked out in front of me via teachers, peers, and my parents. Lately, I have been trying to teach my daughter about courage, confidence, and strength. All of course deal with the insecurities of being a gangly, 5 foot 7 inch tall, puberty induced teenage girl.
     Do you remember those days? Ugh,I feel like it was yesterday. I remember feeling like I didn't fit in, like I was the bean pole ,white haired freak of my nearly all Mexican school. The teasing and bullying left scars that I still deal with today. For goodness sake, I was nicknamed, 'Heather, the albino reindeer', amongst my Arizona-Mexican boarder classmates...  
    Even being 30, I sometimes have to deal with my insecurities--like feeling left out, not fitting in, thinking I'm not as cool as the next mom; it all leads me back to my identity in Christ. As I walk these incredibly trying moments out in front of my sixth grader; I am making sure she sees that I stand on God's promises of who I am. I am the daughter of a King, an Heir to His throne, a masterpiece, despite what my feelings tell me. Feelings and perceptions falter and change from one moment to the next; God's word is constant and has been proven as truth for thousands of years. His Word also breathes life into me each and every time I read and accept it! Acceptance is the key here, I can accept what this world tells me as truth, or I can see the truth through God's eyes.
    When the truth is accepted in my heart, another small transformation begins. Most of the time I don't see it or sense it, but Cheyenne does. I pray she learns in her heart who she is in Christ and not what this fading world tells her; for she is fearfully and wonderfully made.

13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well. Psalm 139:13-14.

So Long Acceptance, I Don't Need You Anymore

     
      We all have insecurities, some are more apparent than others. My downfall until recently is wanting to be accepted by others. Growing up as a child, I saw how people reacted to my large family and sized us up as being very poor. I still remember the sting of bully's picking on my disabled brother and the fact we were 'fatherless'. As I grew into my teen years, I felt like an ugly duckling which was reinforced by comments and more bullying throughout high school. 

     Now that I am nearing 30 and am dearly in love with Christ, He is taking down my walls brick by brick. Although some days I must admit, I'm trying to wrestle those bricks out of His hands and back onto my wall. Wanting to be accepted by others is a deep seated desire of friendship, a sense of normal, and belonging. I can't help but ache when a sister in Christ gives me the cold shoulder or gossips about my past behind my back. Though I've handled these situations Biblically before, the result is the same, I have not gained what my heart wants most, acceptance
     It wasn't until this morning when I was emailing a close friend and confidant about the situation when God gently reminded me of five things:

  1. When I accepted Jesus as my savior, I lost my citizenship status of this world. 
  2. Not every person I meet in my life time is going to like me.
  3. I am not to gain favor with man (or every woman for that matter) but strive to be like Jesus.
  4. I am to seek God's face and no one else's. 
  5. The only acceptance or approval I should EVER seek is Christ.

     If you have wounds like I do and long for acceptance, ask Jesus to heal your heart and pick up the book Bondage Breaker by Neil T. Anderson, and meditate on  Ephesians 3:16-21.  
"I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge-that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen."

Take Those "Be Beautiful, Skinny, Young Ad's and Shove it!

  


    "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength"...was the repeating thought as I continued to push through the burn in my muscles. Running on the treadmill is my least favorite thing some mornings. I'd rather be automatically skinny with a perfect body. As far as I know, unless I have access to a personal trainer, get lipo suction monthly, and work out 6 hours a day, I won't look like a celebrity...As a woman living in America, youth and beauty is shoved down my throat on a minute by minute basis. If it's not some commercial on T.V. or ad on the radio, then it's competing with other women, or the front covers of magazines. No matter what, being voluptuous, thin, and desirable is the message I heard loud and clear. 
    I've decided I really don't give a flying leap to what society tells me to be these days. I'm sick of the skinny and 'be youthful' messages. I'm currently boycotting the youthful appearance crud (mainly because I'll be 30 this year and it's time to stop caring about it so much) I want to exercise for me, I want to feel good about myself. I want to maintain this body so I can keep up with my kids, in short, I want to be healthy (and fit back into all my jeans, somehow my metabolism has taken a vacation, PERMANENTLY). 
    Besides the fact I can't afford to buy an entire new wardrobe, exercising is another way of demonstrating discipline and self esteem to my daughters. It's a chance to teach defiance to what society is telling us as females. Growing up female is hard enough with all the message we hear, the least I can do is teach them to love themselves and embrace how God created them.

Wasn't it Easier



Rough draft of Wasn't it Easier, about an experience I encountered awhile ago.

Guess I really did it this time,
Did some things I can't speak of,
Over time, let myself slip from what was mine.
And at night I live it all again.


Wouldn't be shattered on the floor now
If I had known then what I know now.
Guess I let everyone down,
seeing that unmistakable look of disappointment.


Wasn't it easier in my new found ways?
Wasn't it easier in my new creation days?
Wasn't it beautiful in my grace filled days?
When everyone looked at my brand new heart,
had a clean slate and a fresh start.
When everyone believed in me.


Life was so brand new, and nothing couldn't tame this flame.
It burned brighter than those who walked the way for years.


Guess I really did it this time
left myself in front of my warpath,
after the cold stares, gossip, hearing them laugh.
Lost my balance on this tight rope
lost all hope of trying to get it all back.




Picking up the pieces but I can't make 'em fit.
Praying these words, being washed clean, sitting at His feet.
When will they see that who I am is not where I've been?
Who I am is not what I did.
Everyone has secret struggles and fights
But mine played out in sight.


Wasn't it easier in my new found ways?

Wasn't it beautiful in my grace filled days?

When everyone believed in me....and I did too.


Then He says "It's okay, hush now, you're gonna be alright.
Every day is brand new and I won't give up the fight.

It doesn't matter what they see.
You're forgiven in my sight."


"Time heals all wounds, your mistakes won't be remembered.
You'll have new Septembers
It's okay, you're ignited heart is still burning bright to Me.
Who you are is not where you've been, who you are is not what you did.
You're forgiven in my eyes.
Now let it all go, lives change like the weather.
Though you feel all alone in that pew, I'm with you.
I hope you remember that today is never too late to be made brand new.

Haven't Lost the Fight






Where do I begin
these secrets, these moments of self revelation
All past and present
brings a good hard look and painful motivation.

I used to have this figured out,
Used to breathe without a doubt
Now that Im at the end of this road
It's all been shaken and sifted
Nothing uplifted
And my faith has been tested and tried

I need you to know that I havent lost the fight
but Im not through the night
Broken and tried, my faith and my pride
Like a lair looking for forgiveness from the stone.

Insecurities and being afraid
Letting it all fall to the ground
No longer allowing it to pull me down.
Slowly picking up the pieces, sifting through the ashes
Steering clear from wayward glances.

I need you to know that I havent lost the fight
but Im not through the night.
Broken and tried, my faith and my pride

This is where the healing begins
Fighting through the night,
Broken within
New creation, a beautiful sight

Rising up, revelation is clear
Sifting through the ashes
Being drawn nearer
Taking that first step where grace abounds.
